I’m afraid to be judgmental about someone. That’s why I think it’s really important to spend enough time with people.”
Newsha Tavakolian is a self-taught Iranian photographer and photojournalist. Her artistic work mainly focuses on the role of women in the middle east society.
Newsha Tavakolian was born in 1981 in Tehran, Iran. When she was at the age of 16, she followed a photography course and right after, she started working as a photographer for the Iranian press. She broke through internationally when she was 21 years old. In 2004 she started working as a freelancer for The Times. Nowadays, she has established a broad and international portfolio including subjects like war, natural disasters and social documentaries in countries such as Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.
The overall theme of her work reflects the role of women in the middle east society and her criticism towards inflicted national morale. As a press photographer, she often visited areas of crisis and war. One of her recent and well-known photo series is about female Kurdish warriors against IS. Her work often includes photo series of women, friends, and neighbors in Iran.
She is one of the founders of the national collective for female photojournalists, called the ‘Rawiyah-collective’. Nowadays she is a huge inspiration for many of us and well-deserved because we think her work is incredible.
